Radio stations use techniques such as music, podcasts and news live streams to maintain their existing audience. This is common through popular music on Radio stations, important news updates and podcasts such as Late Night Woman's Hour. Radio stations also use public speeches and announcements to widen its audience this could be through the broadcaster features that have a fanbase or a platform with them such as Lauren Laverne who is a DJ. The lifestyle, drama genre side of radio 4 would maintain the existing audience as middle-aged elderly pupils tend to stay consistent with what they watch and tune into. The content veries which provides a range of different interests for a verity of auidences such as podcasts, drama series and news. For example 'The Archers' a series that some may find interesting or 'interesting women' or even 'In our time'. The way this radio station could develop their audience is by different type of podcasts such as 'Late Night Women's Hour'. Which could get younger pupils interested in radio 4's content as the podcast is for younger to older women, that are feminine and interested in public discussion on popular topics such as 'love island', 'shopping' or 'fatshion' and etc, or like to listen to it. Which in results gets more listeners then gaining a wider audience.
You can focus on how much the content, presenters, programme brand and technical codes of the key text would appeal to the typical Radio 4 listener, and in what ways these elements are trying to reach a new audience. You could also look at how the BBC markets and advertises itself, and how the key text uses new technologies or different forms of broadcasting to widen its appeal.
