KEY TEXT : I, Daniel Blake ( Loach 2016)
A social drama film
What clues are there to why this is an independent film ?
A clue that makes the film independent is the smaller, unrecognised production company meaning the film will barely be marketed and successful.
Another clue is the storyline, independent films tend to focus on a certain realistic issue, this film focuses on poverty and rejection in society that ultimatley controls your life. For example the man stating he's had a heart attack and being told he has to work (after his doctor told him not to in his condition) but needs to as he's failing to afford items he needs but is being denied work and support allowance.
Additionally a clue could also be the target audience as it's focused on an old man the elderly could relate more meaning people with health conditions that don't have the best finance would be more interested in a film like this.
Who is the director of I, Daniel Blake ? Summarise what types of film he makes ( genre, narratives, locations, messages etc.) with other examples of his previous work.
Ken loach: a socialist
He makes social dramas that target the way society treats people most commonly the elderly.
Who are the stars of I,Daniel Blake ? Summarise any previous experience
The stars of the film are the old man (Daniel Blake) who had a heart attack but was still forced to find work to live on and a working class depressed female (Katie Morgan) with children that can't recieve enough benefits or find work.
Is the film low budget or high budget ? How do you know ?
Low budget as there isn't any well known directors or famous stars in the film which would mean the budget wouldn't be as expensive as a mainstream movies budget.
Which companies produced and financed I, Daniel Blake ? Give information about the BBC and BFI in particular.
Why would they be interested in funding and supporting a film like I,Daniel Blake? ?
Companies: Sixteen Films, Why Not Productions, Wild Bunch, British Film Institute (BFI) (support) (as BFI), BBC Films (support), Les Films du Fleuve, France 2 Cinéma (participation), Canal+. The BBC and BFI would most likely be interested in funding and supporting an indepedent film like i, daniel blake so it raises awareness to societal issues so it gets publicity and has been supported by marketing prior to it getting public, due to their role having to make sure culturally and socially important British films get made and seen.
MARKETING
The marketing for I,Daniel Blake combined traditional marketing ( poster ,trailer wtc. ) with a more innovative and creative marketing campaign which helped overcome budget limitations and contributed to the film's financial success
Using the marketing campaign for I,Daniel Blake ( poster, trailer, interviews, etc.) explain the following elements about the film.
Genre ,themes, ideologies and social messages of film, setting, representations, how it targets main target audience and any secondary audiences, desired response from audience, any critical response or awards
The genre is drama, the theme is poverty, ideologies and the social messages of the film are towards the goverment and how they aren't willing to help and understand situations of others in need of support, the setting was in newcastle, representations were the working class areas around that showed how the enviroment hasn't been looked after properly, It targets the main middle aged audience because it focuses on the main charcater's struggles and lifestyle that working class citizens could relate to, it targets the secondary audience of 18 (younger audience) onwards by the younger female star that also faces similar issues, that is common in British society. Which brings in a variety of viewers and not just the middle aged. The audiences response were heartbreaking, realistic, serious topic and relateable characters etc. The film didn't win any awards specifically but Ken loach had a nomination film for the BAFTA (outstandig British Film) award for his film 'Sorry We Missed You'.
Who do you think is the ideal target audience for the film ? Consider age, location, gender , political beliefs, class, interests
The ideal target audience would be 18-60 as 18 is your starting point of adulthood where you could experience financial bumps and depression if you have no support, and during your middle aged period, you are more prone to illnesses and living on benfits or your pension which is mostly relateable with this film for the audience. Location could be any working class areas, Gender isn't specifc but for the younger adults audience: females as most situations involve children and middle aged men: as they recieve less support emotionally which could distract their motivation for work prior to getting sick or needing more finance.
