[3] An independent film is a social concerned realistic storyline film based on societal issues. It targets an elderly audience and is less recognised as it tends to not have a well known director and production company. b) Briefly explain what vertical integration is. [2] Vertical integration is two or more stages of production normally controlled by seperate films, for example Apple who acquired AuthenTec, which makes the touch ID fingerprint sensor that go into it's iPhone's. c) Explain how independent films use marketing and other methods to target and maximise their potential audience . Refer to I, Daniel Blake to support your points. (10] Independent films use marketing by going to public platforms that aren't mainstream, to raise awareness to a societal concern that they would also like to help with for example the BBC who helped promote I, Daniel Blake. As it is their duty to help spread an issue so it's avoided and sorted for people that go through the problem. They also use in an independent film like I, Daniel Blake marketing by making the star of the film an old man with relateable issues to the elderly in society, which would gather a fitted audience targeted at middle-ages and up. Futhermore they used marketing within the advert through the secondary star the young woman who had a common issue in society that also maximised the audience of young adults as well as the middle aged people. In indepedent films directors try to market their films by promoting one realistic storyline that will gather people that experience the same situations as others, they also make the film a social drama so it's more interesting and grabs more viewers. Indepedent films tend to also have a lot of text which older people would prefer to read, as oppose to the younger generations who prefer to watch a film. d) Explain how economic contexts and financial considerations shape mainstream films. Refer to Black Panther to support your points. [10 ] Economical factors such as the budget for a mainstream movie like Black Panther is $200 million, which shapes mainstream films as their companies are well known successful businesses, for exmaple Marvel who owns this action, supernatural, sci-fi successful mainstream film. Mainstream films usually consist of high budgets, famous directors, celebrities and a huge company. Most companies and directors would help promote and fund mainstream movies as it's targeted to a wider audience and is loved by lots of people. Which in return gets companies more money and recognition. Directors tend to make mainstream movies have a common theme of supernatural, action, sci-fi, thriller or fantasy drama as it sells and gets more audience attention. For example, Black panther, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man which all have a very high gross domestic (total market value of all the final goods and services produced in a specific time period) and 3 similar themes: supernatural, sci-fi and action, which emphasises the themes needing to being specific for it to get to mainstream publicity/ audiences. Directors and companies tend to make their target audience children and young adults as they find more interest in fictional films and storylines. Which makes the finance grow quicker as most people in the world on average are younger than 30.
