INDUCTION: Written Task.

Explore how gender is represented  in at least two examples from  the media ( TV,magazines , music videos , games, , film, TV advertising etc) .  You should include both print and audiovisual examples.

Gender in the media is a main factor of inequality, due to the media such as TV, Games, Films or even Advertisements. This can be viewed through sectors such as The News where men have been seen to have more say than women, not only an overtake but also more aggressive interactions. This is further proven in Good Morning Britain where there was a debate over 'traditional masculinity' being ' harmful' and the man was very disturbed by the accusations being used against men, however the women were trying to get their points across but wasn't being allowed due to the male being dismissive to the females views.

Gender in the media, such as articles can be another factor of inequality due to a case on The BBC paying a man more for the same job/ position than a woman because of the stereotype that women aren't as equal as men. Which resulted in The BBC being fined all the money they willingly didn't pay the woman. This term is known as the 'glass ceiling' where females are capped at a certain limit of pay due to men being seen as the breadwinners and providers in society.

Another factor could be Games, such as GTA where males would be holding weapons and money as a representation of the person in control, whereas the women would be naked, as a slave or assistant rather than an equal partner.

A final factor of gender inequality could be Films, for example 'Murdered by my boyfriend' where the male was allowed to go out where he pleased and do what he likes but as the girl does the same it causes a lot of conflict resulting in her death by him murdering her. This example is a good factor to use when discussing inequality because it shows the difference between men and women's actions and who's is allowed without say/ vise versa.

The theorist Stuart Hall can be used as an example of this inequality because he believes 'the idea that stereotyping, as a form of representation, reduces people to a few simple characteristics or traits'. Which can be seen as the conflict in gender as it reduces females choices.
